Why Your Breakouts Keep Failing (And How to Stop the Trap)

''Every trader knows this feeling''...down to the end

Price tests a major level. A massive green candle breaks through. You enter a buy order, expecting a run. Minutes later, the candle leaves a long wick, collapses back down, and sweeps your stop-loss.

It feels like the market is watching you. It isn't. You simply bought at the exact price institutions were looking to sell.

The Mechanic Behind the "Fakeout"

Big banks and institutions cannot place huge sell orders all at once without moving price against themselves. They need liquidity—an ocean of buyers.

When price breaks resistance, two things happen at once:

  •  Breakout traders hit Market Buy.
  •  Existing short sellers get stopped out (which are automatic Buy orders).

That sudden spike of retail buying volume gives institutions the counterparties they need. They fill their sell orders right into your buy orders, the momentum evaporates, and price drops.

Three Simple Rules to Stay Safe

  •  Wait for the candle close: Never enter while a candle is still forming. A powerful breakout at minute 15 can turn into a rejection wick by minute 60.
  •  Trade the retest, not the break: Let the initial push go without you. If buyers are truly in control, price will pull back to test the broken level as new support. Entering on the retest gives you a cleaner entry and a much safer stop-loss.
  •  Respect the failed move: If price breaks out and instantly snaps back inside the previous range, do not re-enter in frustration. That false move often signals a sharp move toward the opposite side of the range.

Trading breakouts is not about speed; it is about patience. When you stop chasing the first green candle and wait for the market to confirm its direction, you stop paying for institutional entries.
